I don't object to the bats living in the leeland cyprus tree, which has grown to be huge, right next to the entrance to the house I live in now. I don't object to bats in general. They do their thing, they eat a lot of mosquitos: I have a live and let live policy on bats.
That having been said, I really wish that these particular bats at my house would get used to the sound of the car door closing. I know they're wide awake at 12:00 at night when I get home, and, presumably, easily startled. And it's not so bad if I get home, grab my stuff, slam the car door closed and a bat flies out of the tree near my head. It's when I come home, slam the car door, and a BUNCH of bats ( what's the proper word for a herd of bats?) flies out.
I already know I'm weird. I don't need a bunch of bats heralding my arrival home! It makes me feel like an evil being in an old movie. Like I'm Count Dracula....or at least Count Chocula. If I was one of those Christians who believed there was an "elect" it would really freak me out. As it is, I'm not one of those Christians who believes there's an "elect" and I'm still a little bothered by it.
Help.

Speaking as a Christian who believes in the doctrine of Divine election, I am happy to report that bats bother me not at all, not even in large quantities at close quarters.
Should they?
As to what to do about them, I have no idea. Now, if you had a mole problem, you could borrow my cat. She'd take care of it right away.

Bats hate high-pitched sounds, meaning those that occur at pitches even above what dogs can hear. It messes with their navigation. You can get devices that plug in and emit such a sound that supposedly drive the bats, well, batty, until they leave.
Unfortunately, they may also drive poor Winston batty.
I doubt you'll be able to reason with them, as most bats don't understand a word of English. And, rounding them all up and putting little muzzles on them is not very realistic, either.

Nah, you'ld only be Count Chocula if the bats were made of chocolate.
May you could talk to a wildlife expert. Keywords to google: Oregon Ridge, wildlife rescue maryland, patuxent wildlife preserve, stuff like that.

Here is an awesome website with lots of info on Maryland bats:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/bats/nhpbatintro.asp
There are 10 different species of bats that live in MD! Also- bat poulations are declining in North America.
