Scurrying Around at Holiday Time [Observations]
I did some Christmas shopping today. It appears that my Christmas dollar is not going to go as far this year as it did last year - price of gasoline and all that.
So I decided to check out Big Lots where there are sometimes good deals to be had. Some of their stuff is just junk of course, but I buy stuff for myself there all the time. Or I did.
Today as I was looking at what I thought might be some very promising food gifts I saw something moving out of the corner of my eye. It was a mouse. It scurried under the the merchandise in the asle nearest me....
It didn't even scurry all that FAST. I mean, it moved like a mouse, but it was kind of the mouse equivilent of sauntering.
Okay. So I know that anytime you have a stock room you're going to have vermin. Most places just kind of try to stay on top of them. But when someplace is so over run with them that they're coming out onto the sales floor with all the light and noise....I'm thinking that's what you call a rodent control PROBLEM. I left.
Even I'm not that cheap.

Well, It's not "The Night Before Christmas," yet, so I guess the mouse figured he still had time to scurry. Lucky for management that you didn't scream and point out the little vermin. That would have been exciting. Ho Ho Ho!!!!

i ordered a bunch of gifts online during the past week - one from Heifer International and a bunch of Maryland-made stuff from The Bee Folks. if any online stores are overrun with vermin, at least i won't know it!

we once found mouse droppings in a bird feeder at a pet store. i went to the cash registers and asked to see a manager, who never appeared although paged a few times. when we got home, i went online and lodged a complaint on the chain's website. i rec'd a std "yeah, we got your email" response the next day, which was followed by a note from the store manager a few days later. the next time we went to teh store (figure that one out - why we went at all) the SAME FEEDER, with the SAME DROPPINGS, was BACK ON THE SHELF! I couldn't believe it! This time someone would actually talk to me, and i pointed out the problems in no uncertain terms. Since we had tended to shop there frequently, i checked the wild bird aisle again on the next visit to see if anything had really changed. much to my amazement, they had cleaned the shelves, removed all of the littered and broken products, and it looked good enough to actually buy. i was pleased that we actaully had a positive effect. i'd had my doubts that anyone would actually liisten and take it seriously. maybe it was the threat of notifying the health dept of vermin droppings on shelves and customer products did it. in any case, we continue to shop there, and we've not seen such an obvious problem since.

I'll bet the mouse was too stuffed with holiday goodies to move all that fast.
