If You Can Read, You Can Do Anything [Observations]
Okay, after much research, squinting at e-forms, reading goobely-gook on the IRS website I e-filed our taxes! Early. Heck, it's not even April. I feel like I should have a big sword with blood on it that I just pulled out of a steaming, recently slain dragon. Hmmm. Bet that would make a mess of my desk.
I was determined to file our taxes myself this year, and to make sure we got all of the deductions we are entitled to. It didn't bother me so much at the time, but it came to really bother me later, how that woman at H&R Block just read stuff off the computer to us last year and we still owed money and had to pay $125.00 bucks to have her read to us. I thought "Well, for crying out loud, I can read."
When I was a kid, a toddler really, my mother used to say "If you can read you can do anything", because there's always printed text on how to accomplish something. It was like a shining key to knowledge, and I actively tried to learn....
sometimes, I wonder if my learning disabilities don't carry over into the language processing part of my brain. When I asked the learning specialist who first diagnosed my acalculia if that could be true, she said it was likely, but that I had just learned some compensatory techniques on my own somewhere, and could always read quickly and comprehend well.
Except for tax forms. It took me forever. I did use TaxAct Online, and found it extremely helpful. Of course, it does all the math for you. If I had to actually do all of those calculations, I could have never gotten it done. But, because I didn't, I could delve into such topics as how weather or not The Hub's tools are subject to depreciation ( they are) and how much what qualifies as "outside your normal area of travel" (about 50 miles). I feel kinda educated.
And also relieved, since we're getting refunds from both the Fed and the State. Without an ounce of irony, I Thank God.
Oh, and tomorrow I turn into an Ididiot! Yep, it's that time of year again - Iditarodhttp://www.iditarod.com/ Time! The lighter haired sled doggies may have the advantage in this years race - global warming has been heating up the course for years now. But time will tell, and there's sure to be lots of excitement and drama!
Mushers are such cool people. I bet they never worry about their taxes.
