Have Mercy! []
Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'
I still see her dark eyes glowin'
She was 21 when I left Galveston
Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston
I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin' out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run
Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston
"Galveston" Jimmy Webb / Glen Campbell 1969
My Dad was a Glen Campbell fan when we were kids, and I used to hear this song playing all the time around the house...
It always gave me quite a picture in my head, similar to those ads Texas uses to lure tourist where cowboys wandering through the dessert are suddenly on the sandy coastal beach. I was also intrigued by how a woman in the type of clothing most women wore during the Spanish American war would manage to run along a beach.
Galveston does get hit by hurricanes all the time, of course, but Rita looks like another disaster of biblical proportions. Seems like the Gulf coast just can't catch a break this hurricane season. At least it looks like people are taking this evacuation seriously, and my goodness, the government is gonna be prepared this time.
You might call that a silver lining - still looks pretty grey to me, overall.
I've always loved that song, along with Wichita Lineman....

What do you do if you have a huge fish tank?
How many hotels allow dogs, cats, birds, lizards, hampsters, guinea pigs, mice, rats, pot-belly pigs, snakes, ducks, hermit crabs, (Who did I miss?)?
What do you do if you're a cattle rancher?
Git-along leetle doggies, ya gotta get on the bus!
No hotels allows chickens and goats and sheep and pigs.
