"...for a bird of the air will carry your voice, or some winged creature tell the matter..." --Ecclesiastes 10:20

Who is this mysterious winged creature? Light hearted as the air, she laughes at world, the wise, and herself - but watch out if you tread on the humble or the meek. You may find This Winged Creature has told the matter...

Swollen Paw [Dog Blog]

Winston has a limp. We don't know what caused it. He kind of fell down the stairs the day before yesterday, but he seemed okay right after that.

Then he went outside "baskin" for a while. He loves to bask if the weather is nice. We only leave him on the tie out if we are home and are outside part of the time....but sometimes it's very hard to get him to come in. He loves to lay on the patio in the sun and watch what's going on around him.

There are some bees around. We were thinking maybe he got stung by a bee. It's swollen....

We looked at his "pad" but we can't see anything like a thorn or a stinger.

I wish I believed in "dog psychics" - those people who claim to be able to kind of mind meld with your pet and the animal sends them a picture of how it got injured.

I wish it was getting better, but it seems to be getting worse, even though we gave him a little aspirin over the last two days. I wonder if we can get him to soak his paw in epsom salt?

I wish it wasn't going to be a financial nightmare to take him to the vet....but there's no question that he has to go if he doesn't start to improve by tomorrow. Poor dog.

I wonder what happened to him?

More news later.....

Check for "hot spots", maybe even on the ankle or the leg.

I doubt that Winston has as much of a dramatic streak as Tail, but Tail has had us so worried before by only walking on three legs and acting like he was a complete invalid. That went on for a couple days...he wouldn't even stand up to eat his food, he made us hand feed him!

So naturally, we were worried and took him to the vet. Lots of $$$ later, the vet concluded:

Sore toe.

The next day, Tail was magically walking around acting like nothing was ever wrong! He's a little bit of a drama queen.

I know vets can be expensive...that's partly why I've always considered becoming a vet, so I could co pro bono stuff and help people's hurt and sick animals without charging them a gazillion dollars to look at a sore toe. Maybe you can find someone who does that in your area?

Ooh, also, I remember Brave being fussy about one of his paws one day, favoring it and worrying it...I took a very close look between his toes (it can be pretty furry) and found a thorn. It's very hard for dogs to get in those spots and something prickly in there can cause a lot of irritation. He sure looked grateful when I pulled it out.
