The Strangers in a Stange Land [Bird Blog]
K-Bird has a high level of interest in Admiral and Akbarr, The Hub's two long lived gold fish. Their tank sits catty-corner (or is that kitty-corner?) to her cage, so she has a pretty good view of them.
They have a pretty good view of her, for that matter. I swear that Akbarr is so big I often see him looking, with what could pass for interest in goldfish, at ME, so they can certainly make out the parrot.
Anyway, when it's time to feed the fish....
she always gets very excited and comes over to watch the procedure intently. I'm sure they must seem strange to her, for all that they appear to be flying, they never leave their home. Their flowing fancy tails must look to her like wings, but they never perch. Nor do they make any noise that she can here, no matter what she says to them, or how loudly she sqwalks. And they are colorful in motion, so it's no surprise that they attract her attention.
Interest in fish is not unique to K-Bird. Lots of parrots like to watch fish, and a common bit of advice found in bird books is to make sure that aquariums have lids secure on them, because some birds will go so far as to perch on the sides and lean in for a drink or a closer look and then fall in....which is bad, because birds can't swim.
This morning, though, was the first time she decided to try to get a closer look. For some reason, probably by virtue of the fact that she is doing her "hard molt" and her balance isn't as good, she slid down the cage bars on the outside back of her cage and found herself level with the counter, so she promptly stepped over.
Then she realized that she could walk over and press her beak right up against the aquarium glass. You could see her thinking about it. She'd stretch her neck forward toward the fish, then cautiously move forward a few steps, then stand still a few seconds to see how they reacted. (They didn't)
Finally, she walked upt to the side of the aquarium and "peeped" ("hello!") at them. No response. So she beaked the glass to see what it was. Wasn't sure. Slowly the fish began to turn, and maybe to notice her.
All of the sudden, you could see it dawn on her that she didn't know the "rules" for dealing with fish. But if she were visiting another bird she'd be being really assertive, and as Admiral and Akbarr slowly made their way over in her direction she hot-footed back up to her cage so fast it was really funny.
Whoever said "curiosity killed the cat" only said it because they didn't have a parrot to watch!
How funny! Maybe she thought it was two against one!
